Bread has remained, despite the change in our eating habits, the favorite food of the French.
It accompanies dishes or becomes the basis, with sandwich breads so quickly prepared and consumed. However, when kept in the open air, it quickly loses its softness, it becomes stale and dehydrates.
Buying daily bread from the baker is difficult for you and you don’t want food waste, so here is a tip that allows you to keep bread for more than two weeks.
White bread, wholemeal bread, rye bread… and of course the baguette! There is almost a type of bread for every need.
You cannot buy bread every day, you want to keep it longer, so you have opted for sliced and packaged bread, offering beautiful square toasts. And still the problem: in three or four days, when you are halfway through the bread…
You have to throw it away! The mold invaded the crust and began to attack the crumb. You risk food poisoning. Don’t worry, here’s a tip to keep it going for up to two weeks if not longer!

How to keep bread as long as possible?
To preserve your bread, you have tried many methods. Starting with the bread bin. Slipping the fresh bread in a cloth was easy, yet it doesn’t last more than three days. So, you’ve tried freezing…
Thawed bread is more humid and within a few hours, it is quite the opposite, it dries out. You wanted to move towards making homemade bread… Equipping yourself with a new food processor was not your primary concern.
You have opted for sandwich bread, packaged, sliced, and wholemeal. From now on, you pay attention to its expiration date. It lasts about six days like this… It is possible to go even further beyond this short period.

– Dehydration and mold will disappear and your bread will last a long time
To do this, you must leave your bread in the refrigerator. The low temperature will limit the proliferation of bacteria. In a plastic bag, the bread will keep its softness. However, the moisture from the bread will tend to condense on the plastic, which could cause mold.
So take a pair of scissors and make openings at the top and bottom of the bag. A few small holes so that the bread can only “breathe”.
You will be surprised to see that your sliced bread will last for more than two weeks! Likewise, for breads of the same type in a family version that you always keep on hand for surprise visits or sleepovers…
How to properly store bread and other foods in the fridge?
In a “static cold” refrigerator, good food preservation requires choosing the right place to place your food.
Your bread will not come into the “vegetable drawer”, whose temperature is above 6°C and which is humid. Nor, moreover, in the highest zone, “fresh zone”, where dairy products, cooked vegetables, cooked meats and fish are placed.
It is in the intermediate zone, called the “cold zone” between 0 and 4°C that your packaged bread will last for a long time. In a ventilated fridge, place it wherever you like.

If the cold temperature limits the exponential development of bacteria, all this is only short-lived. It is important to set certain rules for the fridge.
Raw meat, no more than 24 hours! Egg-based preparations, likewise. Packaged cooked meat, opened can of milk or cream: no more than 3 days.
You will store and consume your products in order. Also ensure good packaging with cling film, or dedicated boxes.
It is possible to keep the bread for more than two weeks, in plastic packaging and in the fridge. To store it, place it in a “cold zone”, in a clean and tidy refrigerator.
Not all breads keep equally well
It is important to know that white, country and gluten-free breads have a shorter shelf life due to their composition.
This also applies to pre-cut sliced breads. It is possible to freeze them for longer storage. To preserve your breads, it is recommended to store them at a temperature between 14° and 18°.
