Egg shells for healing orchids

It goes without saying that the term “orchid” is a broad name that encompasses a variety of beautiful flowers. Among these, the Paphiopedilum deserves  a special mention.

This strain is particularly known for its  beautiful foliage  and typically produces one or two large, long-lasting buds in a variety of colors.

The life of a flower can be lengthened or shortened at your choice. Under favorable conditions, they can bloom for up to two months.

Adequate watering is key, and while these plants don’t  require excessive light  , consistent watering is key.

In winter, you should reduce maintenance, while in summer, with higher temperatures,  maintaining a high grooming routine is imperative.

Egg shells can be a game changer for orchid enthusiasts.  Orchids tend to be picky about  acidic substrates , and this is where eggshells come in handy.

So avoid throwing away used eggshells as they are an excellent  source of calcium  and can help neutralize acidity.

Simply grind the peels into a fine powder and add  seven grams  to every liter of substrate for optimal orchid growth.

How to make a fertilizer for your orchid

One method is   to recycle eggshells as a natural fertilizer by crumbling them and sprinkling them under plants.

As they gradually dissolve, the soil will be filled with calcium, which is beneficial for plant growth.

To ward off snails, which are a nuisance to the plant, crushed egg shells can   be sprinkled around the base of the orchid.

Another option is to air dry the eggshells and then grind them into a fine powder.

This variant of eggshell fertilizer can  be sprayed directly  around orchids or added to the soil when planting.

Its effectiveness is particularly pronounced on potted plants.

Another alternative method of obtaining fertilizer from eggshells is to create a suitable solution to water our plants.

To do this, pour boiling water over the eggshells   and leave the mixture to stand for about an hour, stirring occasionally.

Once the egg shells have dissolved, the  liquid fertilizer is  ready to use. Before applying, it is recommended to shake the solution to ensure proper mixing.

For best results, apply eggshell fertilizer directly to the soil around the plant or  spray the mixture  onto orchids.
